Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro No Longer Get Security Updates: What Small Businesses Should Do

On October 13, 2026, Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro received their last security update. From November on, computers still running those editions will not get fixes for new vulnerabilities, even though they keep working normally and show no warning most users would notice.
That matters for small businesses more than for anyone else. Office laptops and desktops typically run Windows 11 Pro, they are often set up once and left alone, and the same month Microsoft shipped a record-breaking set of security fixes. This guide explains who is affected, how to check a computer in a minute, and how to move it to a supported version.
What changed, at a glance
| Windows version and edition | Security updates until | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 24H2 Home / Pro | Ended October 13, 2026 | Upgrade to 25H2 or 26H2 now |
| Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise / Education | October 12, 2027 | Plan the upgrade within the next year |
| Windows 11 23H2 Home / Pro | Ended November 2025 | Upgrade immediately |
| Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2 | Supported | Keep installing monthly updates |
Microsoft’s own wording is short: devices on 24H2 Home and Pro “will no longer receive monthly security and non-security preview updates”. Its recommendation is to update to Windows 11 version 26H2 or 25H2.
Why this is more urgent than it sounds
An unsupported Windows version does not stop working. It simply stops getting fixed. Every month after the cut-off, new vulnerabilities are published for Windows and patched on supported versions only, and attackers study those patches to find the same weaknesses on machines that did not get them.
The pace is high. Microsoft’s October 2026 Patch Tuesday fixed 1,411 vulnerabilities, which BleepingComputer called record-breaking, including a Windows Shell flaw (CVE-2026-96951) that was already being exploited and lets attackers bypass the “Mark of the Web” warning that normally protects you from downloaded files. Microsoft says it is using AI to find and fix vulnerabilities in its products, so large monthly releases are likely to continue. A computer that misses them falls behind quickly.
For a small office, one outdated laptop is enough: it is the device that opens an email attachment, stores saved passwords in the browser and connects to the company VPN or cloud accounts.
“An unsupported system rarely fails loudly. It just quietly stops getting the fixes everyone else receives.”

How to check a computer in one minute
- Press
Windows+R, typewinverand press Enter. - The window shows the version (for example 24H2, 25H2 or 26H2) and the edition is listed under Settings → System → About as Windows 11 Home, Pro, Enterprise or Education.
- If it says 24H2 or 23H2 together with Home or Pro, the computer no longer receives security updates.
Do this for every computer that touches company email, files or customer data, including the owner’s personal laptop if it is used for work.
How to upgrade
On most computers running 24H2, the move to a newer version is a small download that finishes after one restart, because 25H2 and 26H2 share the same foundation.
- Save your work and make sure you have a recent backup.
- Open Settings → Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- If Windows 11, version 26H2 (or 25H2) appears, select Download & install.
- Restart when asked, then run
winveragain to confirm the new version. - Go back to Windows Update and install any remaining updates until none are left.
Microsoft is rolling the update out in phases. Devices with “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” turned on will receive it automatically when it is ready for them.
If the upgrade does not appear
- Updates are paused or deferred. Check Settings → Windows Update for a pause, and ask your IT provider whether a policy, management tool or update server is holding feature updates back. That was a sensible setting once; now it keeps the PC unprotected.
- The hardware is not supported. Some older computers were upgraded to Windows 11 without meeting its requirements and may not be offered new versions. Plan a replacement rather than keeping an unpatched machine in use.
- Not enough disk space or a failed update. Free up space, run Windows Update troubleshooting and try again; if it keeps failing, have your IT provider look at it.
A short checklist for the office
- List every work computer with its Windows version and edition.
- Upgrade every 24H2 and 23H2 Home or Pro machine this week.
- Check that automatic updates are on and nothing is paused.
- Retire or isolate any computer that cannot be upgraded.
- Repeat the check every few months: Windows 11 versions for Home and Pro are supported for about two years each.
- If any computers still run Windows 10, confirm with your IT provider whether they are covered by Extended Security Updates; otherwise they are also unpatched.
What this has to do with your website
Outdated software is the common thread in most of the incidents we write about, from unpatched PHP to firewalls with known flaws. Office computers are something you check from the inside. What faces the internet, such as your website, email domain and login portals, can be checked from the outside: our free website security check gives a first look in seconds, and an external website security review goes further.
Frequently asked questions
Is Windows 11 24H2 still supported?
Not for Home and Pro editions. Their last security update was released on October 13, 2026. Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 12, 2027.
Will my computer stop working after end of support?
No. It keeps working, but it no longer receives security fixes, so new vulnerabilities discovered after October 2026 stay open on that computer.
How do I know which Windows 11 version I have?
Press Windows + R, type winver and press Enter. The window shows the version, such as 24H2, 25H2 or 26H2. The edition (Home, Pro, Enterprise or Education) is shown in Settings, System, About.
Is upgrading from 24H2 to 26H2 free?
Yes. It is offered through Windows Update at no cost, and on most 24H2 computers it installs as a small update that needs one restart.
Should I choose 25H2 or 26H2?
Microsoft recommends either. 26H2 is the newest version and will be supported the longest, so if Windows Update offers it, it is usually the better choice.
